What is gold-filled jewellery?

Images showing the difference between solid gold, gold-filled and gold-plated jewellery - the amount of gold in each

Gold-filled or gold bonded jewellery consists of a thick layer of solid gold mechanically bonded to a base metal, usually brass or copper, and sometimes silver, using heat and pressure.

You may see the mark 14/20 which means that 1/20th (5%) of the finished piece’s total weight is 14k gold. The gold layer is far thicker than any plating and survives everyday wear and tear much longer.

Our gold jewellery is a range of pure 9ct gold, gold-filled and gold plated, and we will give you that information in the description.
